Baby Development

At week 35, your baby is in the home stretch of the third trimester! Your baby is gaining about half a pound per week now, building up the fat layers needed to maintain body temperature after birth. The lungs are maturing and practicing breathing movements.

The brain is developing rapidly, with billions of neurons forming connections. Your baby's bones are hardening (except for the skull, which stays flexible for delivery). Your baby is likely settling into a head-down position in preparation for birth.

Your Body This Week

At week 35 in the third trimester, you may feel the effects of your growing baby more intensely. Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions) may become more frequent. Back pain, hip discomfort, and difficulty sleeping are common as your belly grows larger.

Shortness of breath can occur as your uterus pushes against your diaphragm. Heartburn and acid reflux may intensify. Swelling in your feet and ankles (edema) is normal but watch for sudden, severe swelling which should be reported to your doctor.

You may feel increased pressure in your pelvis as your baby drops lower in preparation for birth. Frequent urination returns with a vengeance. Nesting instincts may kick in, giving you bursts of energy to prepare your home for baby's arrival.

Tips for This Week

Prepare for labor: Take a childbirth preparation class if you haven't already. Practice breathing techniques and discuss your birth plan with your healthcare provider.

Pack your hospital bag: Have your bag ready by week 36 with essentials for you, your baby, and your partner. Use our Hospital Bag Checklist tool.

Count kicks: Starting around week 28, track your baby's movements daily. You should feel at least 10 movements in 2 hours. Contact your provider if you notice decreased movement.

Rest and prepare: Take advantage of any nesting energy to prepare the nursery and stock up on newborn essentials, but also make time for rest. Your body needs energy for labor.
